TORONTO, ON, September 26, 2024 – The Net-Zero Advisory Body (NZAB) released their 2035 emissions reductions report today. Among their recommendations, the NZAB specifically advises Canada to further analyze permanent carbon removal technologies and track carbon emissions that exceed Canada’s net-zero goals.

Carbon removal is the act of taking carbon emissions out of the atmosphere. All climate strategies must include both short term carbon removal, such as tree planting, and permanent carbon removal methods, which includes a variety of technologies and processes that store carbon for thousands of years.

To make up for excess emissions, the NZAB calls on the Government of Canada to pursue negative emissions – or carbon removal processes. Specifically, the NZAB named the need for setting a numerical target for emissions removed.

“A target involving permanent carbon removal is one way that Canada can reap the environmental and economic benefits of these technologies. This report confirms that all likely net-zero futures include a significant increase in our carbon removal capacity, and a target helps ensure that these are used in addition, rather than in place of emission reductions. The government should consult Canadians to ensure these technologies are a force for good. In an environment of increasing costs, a numerical target would also be a no-cost signal to investors and businesses to support these critical climate technologies,” said Na’im Merchant, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Carbon Removal Canada.

If the recommendations are adopted, this could be a major step in the right direction. Earlier this summer, Carbon Removal Canada, along with 12 other organizations, submitted an open letter to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change (ECCC) and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, urging a public consultation on establishing a target for megatonnes of carbon removed from the atmosphere, in addition to a emissions reduction target.

Carbon Removal Canada is glad to see that the NZAB agrees that carbon removal is necessary to reach net-zero goals and hopes to see ECCC action the recommendation to consult Canadians further on excess emission targets.
