OTTAWA, ON, December 12, 2024 – The Government of Canada has announced its climate targets for 2035, and has included a commitment to soliciting feedback from stakeholders on carbon removal’s role in Canada’s future economic and environmental ambitions. Carbon Removal Canada applauds the government for recognizing the urgent need to address residual emissions, through carbon removal,  in addition to reducing emissions. 

Permanent carbon removal solutions will improve Canada’s economic competitiveness, employing thousands of Canadians from coast to coast to coast, all while developing critical low-carbon supply chains.  This will aid the country in making verifiable progress towards its net-zero goals and signal to international companies and investors that Canada is a top destination for permanent carbon removal project development. 

Earlier this year, Carbon Removal Canada and leading carbon removal organizations submitted an open letter to the Government of Canada urging a public consultation on permanent carbon removal’s role in achieving net-zero and a low-carbon economy. 

The government seeking feedback will create an opportunity to hear from Indigenous communities, provincial governments, and industry to discuss the economic and environmental opportunity that carbon removal presents. This will allow the government to fully grasp what is needed to scale these technologies, and will help Canada explore the benefits associated with them.
